Over half of World ID holders haven’t scanned their eyeballs

More than half of World’s 26 million ID holders have yet to verify themselves using the company’s controversial eyeball scanning orbs.
The X account for World Chain, the blockchain behind the World Network, claimed that the number of confirmed World IDs stood at over 26.1 million on April 28.
However, this figure didn’t tally with World’s 12.35 million “unique humans.” World’s parent company, Tools for Humanity, clarified that the term “unique humans” refers to World ID holders who have a verified ID.

This means that 13.75 million only have “unverified” World IDs and haven’t actually scanned their eyeballs yet.
World couldn’t reach its eyeball goals
The Sam Altman-helmed crypto ID startup previously predicted in 2021, when the company was called Worldcoin, that it would reach a target of onboarding one billion people by 2023. However, it’s still roughly 987.7 million shy of this goal.

World Chain’s latest promo was made two days before World announced a slew of new partnerships and expansions yesterday.
- World partnered with the parent company of Hinge and Tinder to incorporate its ID system into the dating apps
- Users can now spend Worldcoin (WLD) at any place Visa is accepted with a new “World Card.”
- World is now also available in the US and users are eligible for its Worldcoin tokens (WLD).
Oddly, World lists 824,100 unique humans in the US despite not launching it in the country until April 30. When asked about this figure, World told Protos that its orbs were “previously available around the country for a ‘tour.'”

Update May 5, 08:09 UTC: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that World “got its eyeball count wrong by 14 million.”
World has clarified that the unique humans metric is made up of verified World IDs, and Protos has updated the article to reflect this.
